Stepping outside feels like you’re opening up the oven door. Except there’s no Mac n’ cheese inside, just attitude and sweat. Your A/C is blowing like the little engine that could, the kids are bored inside, and you’re two degrees away from cussing ERRY’BODY out.
If you’re a solo mom trying to make it through this heat wave while parenting, showing up for work, and still looking halfway decent? This survival guide is for you.
🌬️ 1. Comfort Over Cute—Always
This is not the time to sacrifice comfort for aesthetics. Let go of the idea that you need to “dress up” for the heat. Give your body what it needs:
Breathable fabrics like cotton and linen
Biker shorts + tank tops or sundresses = uniform
Cooling towels, neck fans, and frozen washcloths on standby
Want to level up? Chill your body lotion in the fridge. You’re welcome.
💦 2. Hydration = A Love Language
Water is the plug. And yes, I know it gets boring—but dehydration will have you out here dizzy and snapping on everybody. Here’s how to make it alittle more sexy:
Add lemon, mint, or berries to your water bottle
Freeze juice cubes to drop in for flavor
Give your kid their own “spa cup” so you’re not fighting over yours
Cut back on sugary drinks for the kiddos as it can quicken the dehydration process
Listen—if your lips are dry and your mood is worse, go drink some water and get yourself together.
🍦 3. Ice Cream Isn’t Just for the Kids
You earned that creamsicle, boo. Keep the freezer stocked with:
Fruit bars
Mini ice cream sandwiches
Sorbet cups
Summer self-care might just be one popsicle away from peace.
☀️ 4. Adjust Your Hours
Between 11am and 4pm, outside is a no-go unless it’s an emergency. That’s prime heatstroke time. Instead:
Do outdoor activities early in the morning or closer to sunset
Break out the sprinkler or water balloons in the shade
Use a patio, balcony, or driveway for water play—no backyard required
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate (yes, I said it again!)
😁 5. Don’t Let the Heat Steal Your Summer Fun
I know it’s hard to fulfill all of their summer wishes all the while trying to keep them safe from this extreme weather. Be patient with yourself.
So here’s your permission slip:
Kids want to go to the amusement park? Setup obstacle courses in the basement or in the backyard in the shade.
What about a trip to the zoo or museum? Some of the best artists mastered their craft right at home. Do some arts n craft right at home or watch a few National Geographic episodes to check out animals from around the world in a way even the zoo couldn’t show you!
Want to still go to brunch? Host something at your place.
Some days, keeping everyone alive and mostly cool is the win.
🧖🏾♀️ 6. Take a Solo A/C Break
When your sanity starts melting, go take a break in somebody else’s A/C:
The bar at your fave restaurant
Library lounge
Grocery store slow-walk
That quiet corner in Marshalls (where you pickup the latest cute bag to go with your sundress)
Call up your village and get a few hours to cool down on your own.
💬 Let’s Talk…
The heat may be out of control, but you don’t have to be. Keep cool, keep hydrated, and breathe.
Because even in 100-degree weather, you’re still holding it down like the fabulous mama you are. And your kids will love you whether you take them to Disney or bring Disney to them!
