The Big Chop often represents a new chapter in a woman’s life.
Whether it’s after a breakup, a new job, a spiritual awakening, or she just wants a clean slate; a new haircut often symbolizes liberation and freedom.
I’m not sure when or even why women’s identities have become so attached to our hair but in recent years, we have started to redefine who we are on our own terms. No longer holding the standard of what’s beautiful or acceptable in the hands of men but in each individual woman.
In 2022, I decided that I would start my loc journey. I had worn my hair in a short haircut for over 20 years but I wanted to try something different. I had been working on myself spiritually and mentally and so I thought the outside should reflect the inside transformation.
Initially things were going according to “plan”. I was starting to feel like a new person.

But then that’s when the problems started. I was starting to feel like someone ELSE. Like an imposter. Almost as if I was trying to be someone other than who I really was. Someone I thought I was supposed to be.
Fast forward to this year and I just realized I couldn’t take the imposter syndrome any longer. The energy was just weighing heavy on me and all the internal work I had done seemed to be unraveling.
Every time I looked in the mirror, I didn’t see ME, but someone ELSE.
So I made the decision to take off the mask and be true to who I am! I decided to do the Big Chop! I cut it all off!!
And it was hands down the most liberating feeling I had felt in a long time! I finally felt as tho my growth had come full circle!!!
I don’t know how hair became such the identifier that it has but let me tell you, you do what makes YOU feel alive!
Whether it’s a long weave, braids, locs, or a buzz cut, live your BEST hair life!
Don’t feel pressured to live up to any trends or expectations of society. At the end of the day, when you look in the mirror, do you love the image that looks back at you? Only YOU have the answer to that.
I just wanted to write this little post of encouragement because I know sometimes we see images on social media and may feel as if there’s something amiss with us if we aren’t doing what the masses are.
Walk your own path and if that means the Big Chop, well snip snip sis!!!
