Summer is here! And the heat? Already disrespectful. But who has the time or the electric bill to be in the mirror for hours fighting with their hair? I don’t! Neither do you!
Personally, I feel like summertime is the best time for our hair to truly get the shine it deserves! And as a solo mom, we already have so much on our plates that not having to worry too much about our hair makes these summer months that much more bearable.
So I put together this list of some classic and timeless go-to summer styles that we all know and love!
So let’s get into it.
1. Knotless Braids
I meeeeaaannnnnn, duhh! Like, I could really just stop here! Lol! What vacation is complete without this classic style? Knotless braids are lightweight, versatile, and easy on your edges—most of the time lol. Plus, they can last up to six to eight weeks with proper care. Perfect for every summer occasion—beach days, pool dips, and of course brunch on the patio by the water.
Style Tip: Get the medium to large sized box braids for a more summer feel.
2. Passion Twists
Now if you’re trying to feel like an island gal, then look no further!! Soft, flirty, and full of texture—passion twists give goddess energy with zero effort. They’re lighter than box braids and give that effortless boho look.
Bonus: They look even better the older they get. Less maintenance = more mom wins.
3. TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro) or Short Cut
Those of you who know me, know that I wore my hair really short for over twenty years! It literally was my signature look. So you already know I’m a fan of the short cut. Shout out to my Small Head Bald Head ladies! TWAs and short cuts are bold, beautiful, and easy to rock rain or shine! Keep it moisturized, throw on some big hoops, and baby, you’ll be turning heads for sure!
4. Sleek Low Buns & Puff Styles
For the days when you barely made it out the house with clean clothes on, a low bun or puff is a go-to. perfect for running errands or a casual outing. Just slick it down with a good edge control and you’ve got a polished look in minutes.
Style Hack: Add a scarf or headband for an instant upgraded look.
5. Wigs
Now I know I said I was rocking the short cut for over twenty years blah blah blah. But babyyyyyy! Let me tell you! Your girl tried on a wig a few months ago and has NOT looked back since! The only regret I have is it took me over forty years to discover this glorious phenomenon! Lol!
A good glueless wig is like your favorite pair of leggings—comfortable, versatile, and ready to go when you are. Like, you can really go from curly to a buss down without touching a flat iron. And best of all? Your real hair gets a break underneath. I mean, like I might not NEVER (yup, I said it! NOT NEVER) go back!
Pro Tip: Opt for bob or shoulder-length wigs in the summer if you don’t want to feel like you’re walking around with a blanket on your neck. Or wear the Deep Wave for when you’re headed to the pool or beach! Cause it’ll def be giving sexy MILF when it’s wet!
6. Feed-In Cornrows
Cute, classic, and heat-proof. Whether it’s straight backs, side designs, or braided into a bun, this style keeps you cool and looking polished without needing daily upkeep. Very simple and no fuss. Especially for my busy mamas who are spending all their weekends at little league practice in the sun!
7. Wash and Go
For my natural girlies, this is the ultimate quick style. For the most part. Just wash, LOC method (leave-in conditioner, oil, cream), and go. There’s a few ways to accomplish this look:
• You can choose to do it the night before and then two strand twist your hair so that it’s dry by the next day.
• Wash and LOC the day of and let it air dry.
• Wash, LOC, and use a diffuser on your dryer to get more defined curls.
Totally up to you!
FYI: The first couple of times might be trial and error, but once you find your curl combo, this can be a really cute summer style.
8. Headwraps & Turbans
Chile, when all else fails, wrap it up and go on about your business. A bold, colorful headwrap not only protects your hair but instantly turns your look into a summer slay. Whether your braids are fuzzy, your twist-out flopped, or it's wash day—there’s a wrap for that.
Final Thoughts:
Mama, summertime is the perfect time for your hair to be the centerpiece! You don’t have to do the most to feel like the best version of you.
Choose styles that make your life easier, make you feel confident, and hold up when the heat is trying to curl up your edges.
Love, light, & style
