She somehow manages to be everywhere at once.

Honestly, schools would probably fall apart without moms like her.

She rushed out of the office, fought traffic, and showed up still wearing her work clothes. Her hair might be slightly windblown and she might still be holding her phone and her car keys, but she made it.

She has her phone out before the event even starts. She’s zooming in, recording videos, and taking pictures from every possible angle.

She rushed out the house, threw on the nearest clothes she could find, and barely made it through the door before things started.

4. “You must have made bad choices”

Life happens. People change. Relationships end. You live and you learn. And sometimes the strongest decision you can make is choosing yourself and your child instead of staying stuck in something that no longer serves either of you.

5. “You don’t have time for yourself”

We absolutely do, because we have learned the hard way that burnout is not cute. Whether it is therapy, travel, quiet mornings, gym time, or doing absolutely nothing, solo moms prioritize their well-being. Our kids need us whole, not worn down.

6. “You need saving”

No, ma’am. We do not need rescuing. We need support. There is a big difference. Solo moms are capable, resourceful, and resilient. We are not waiting for a hero. We are already showing up as one every day.

7. “You can’t be successful without a partner”

Traveling as a solo mom is not about being spontaneous—it’s about being intentional. Every trip I take is planned with my sanity, my son’s experience, and my wallet in mind. And no, I don’t wait until I have “extra money” or a backup adult to start living.

I plan trips the same way I run my life: with a plan, a backup plan, and the understanding that something might go left—and that is okay.

Here is how I do it.

I Start With the Purpose of the Trip

Before I even open a travel app, I ask myself one question:

What do we actually need right now?

Sometimes I need a break from cooking, cleaning, and answering 47 questions a day.

Sometimes my son needs new scenery and something to look forward to.

Sometimes we both need time together without real life interrupting every five minutes.

Once I know the goal, the trip plans itself. I’m not booking an action-packed itinerary when what we really need is rest and room service. Every trip does not have to be extravagant to be worth it.

I Choose Travel That Works for Solo Moms

I don’t do complicated. At all.

I look for:

• Direct flights whenever possible

• Walkable destinations (because wrangling luggage and Ubers is not the vibe)

• Cruises, resorts, or places with built-in activities

• Accommodations where I am not entertaining 24/7

This is exactly why cruises are my go-to. My son has things to do, and I’m not exhausted by noon. Everybody wins.

If a trip already feels like work before I book it, it’s a no. I’m not stressing myself out for a vacation.

I Budget Without Shame or Side-Eye

I don’t treat travel like some guilty pleasure I need to justify.

I plan ahead, watch prices, and build trips into my budget on purpose. I choose smart over flashy every time. Clean, safe, and convenient will beat “cute but unnecessary” all day long.

Sometimes the trip is not Instagram-worthy—but it’s exactly what we needed. And honestly? Those quick two-day getaways are clutch. You don’t need a seven-day vacation to feel refreshed.

I Keep the Schedule Loose

One-parent travel means I leave room for real life.

I don’t overschedule our days. I plan one main thing and let the rest unfold naturally. Naps, mood swings, and random joy are all built into the plan.

Some of our favorite memories came from slowing down, not from running from activity to activity. When you are the only adult, you learn quickly that doing less often gives you more.

I Prep So I Can Relax Later

I’m not “extra.” I’m prepared.

Before every trip, I:

• Double-check transportation

• Share our itinerary with someone I trust (hi, Ma)

• Keep important documents and essentials in my carry-on

• Make sure travel insurance is handled

Doing this ahead of time means I am not scrambling once we arrive. I like my trips smooth, not chaotic.

This past weekend, it was just me and my baby. No fancy dinner. No roses. Just swimsuits, towels, and quality time. And honestly? That part alone made it special.

We decided to spend the day at DreamWorks Water Park inside the American Dream mall in New Jersey. I wanted something fun, active, and memorable. And in a lot of ways, it really was.

What I Loved

Let me start with the good because there was plenty of it.

There was more than enough to do for a full day visit. This was not one of those parks where you run out of activities in two hours and start checking the clock. Between the slides, the wave pool, and the raft rides, my kiddo was fully entertained the entire time.

Now let’s talk about that wave pool.

When I say those were real waves, I mean real waves. Not a little splash. Not a gentle ripple. They were rolling in heavy and consistent, and my child was in absolute heaven. He stayed in there for hours. HOURS. I finally had to make him take a break.

At one point the music was blasting so loud it felt like a full-on pool party. The energy was high. Kids were dancing. Parents were trying to keep up. It was giving celebration.

And the raft ride that circles around the park? I forgot the name but baby. That thing is no joke.

I was screaming like I was about to meet my ancestors. Meanwhile, my son who clearly has no fear, was begging to go again. He is a full daredevil and it was right up his alley. Watching him light up like that made every nerve-wracking second worth it. But I ain’t go again.

Also, I have to be honest. The food prices surprised me. They were moderately priced. Not cheap, but not highway robbery either. For an amusement-style park, I expected worse.

What I Didn’t Love

Now let’s be real because you know I always keep it honest with my boo thangs.

After about noon, it got really, really busy.

What started off as manageable turned into packed sardines. The lines started maxing out. The calm energy shifted. And if you had not secured a lounge chair early? You were standing. Period.

Once the crowds picked up, it started to feel overstimulating for me. Loud. Crowded. A lot of movement. As a mom who already runs on high alert most days, it tipped me into overwhelm. After a few hours, I was ready to go. Thankfully, we had already been there long enough to feel like we got our money’s worth in fun.

Now let’s talk about the price.

It was about $100 per person just for the water park. Even my six-year-old was charged the same price as an adult. That did not sit right with me, especially considering he could not ride every ride due to height restrictions. If you’re charging him adult prices, he should have access like an adult. That part felt like a rip off.

And while there are other attractions inside the American Dream mall, they are not included on the water park ticket. So it adds up fast.

The Comparison

We are personally partial to Great Wolf Lodge.

At Great Wolf, your stay includes access to the water park and additional attractions. The ride variety feels more inclusive for younger kids, especially that six and up age range. For us, it feels more bang for your buck. At American Dream, if you come from out of state, then your hotel stay is completely separate, so again, it starts to add up.

Final Thoughts

Overall, it was cool.

It was fun. It was exciting. It gave my son a weekend he will definitely remember. Seeing him fearless and happy made my mama heart full.

But would we rush back? Probably not.

If we went again, it would be with a group of people to make the price feel more worth it. It was not horrible at all. It just did not completely sell me on what’s included and what’s not.

Still, a weekend spent laughing, screaming down raft rides, and watching my baby conquer waves bigger than him.

That part was priceless.

Valentine’s Day came and went, and baby… it felt different.

I’ve vowed to keep my personal life private from now on so I debated whether I would post this but yall know I can’t keep the olive branch away from yall for too long.

This Valentine’s Day was not about gifts or cheesy cards. It was a celebration of the most healing and powerful thing in this world. Love that does not hurt you. Love that does not confuse you. Love that does not require you to shrink.

I went all out in my own way. I leaned in. I allowed myself to indulge.This was the first Valentine’s Day where I had a healthy partner. A healthy relationship. No confusion. No anxiety spirals. No wondering where I stood. And celebrate it? Oh, I absolutely did.

Not because of the flowers.

Not because of a dinner reservation.

Not because of a perfectly curated Instagram moment.

I celebrated because for the first time in my life, love felt safe.

As a survivor of many traumatic relationships, Valentine’s Day used to feel complicated. I would smile on the outside but internally brace myself. Would he show up? Would he disappoint me? Would I end the night questioning my worth again?

There is something people don’t talk about enough. When you’ve survived toxic love, your nervous system does not immediately relax just because someone says they care about you. Your body remembers. Your heart remembers. Your mind scans for danger even when things look good on paper.

So this year was not about balloons and chocolate. It was about healing.

It was about sitting across from someone who did not trigger my fight-or-flight.

It was about laughing without overthinking.

It was about enjoying affection without wondering what it would cost me later.

And that is so powerful.

For years, love felt like something I had to survive. This year, love felt like something I got to experience. I let myself feel joy without sabotaging it. I let myself be soft.

Because the truth is, when you have been through enough heartbreak, part of you stops believing that healthy love is real. You tell yourself you are fine alone. You build your walls tall. You convince yourself you do not need it.

This year, I did not just celebrate a holiday. I celebrated growth. I celebrated discernment. I celebrated the work I had done to heal enough to even recognize something good when it showed up.

Most importantly, I celebrated myself.

Because before I could receive healthy love, I had to learn how to love me without chaos attached to it. I had to break patterns. I had to choose peace over passion. I had to walk away from what hurt, even when it felt familiar.

For the first time ever, I didn’t feel anxious.

I didn’t feel triggered.

I didn’t feel like I was auditioning for affection.

I felt cherished.

And I allowed myself to enjoy every second of it.

If you are still in the healing phase, hear me clearly: do NOT rush the process. Don’t lower your standards because the calendar says it’s February 14th. Don’t accept breadcrumbs because you’re tired of eating alone.

Let me help you out: most single moms are extremely selective. We have kids, responsibilities, routines, and peace to protect. If you’re in our space, it’s because we want you there—not because we need you.

And let me tell you, in the six years that I’ve now been a single mother, I’ve never had an issue finding an abundance of eligible suitors who wanted to not only be with me but fully commit to me and my son.

2. They Assume the Child Comes With Drama

Men hear “single mom” and immediately picture baby daddy chaos, nonstop arguments, and court dates every other week. While that may be true for some, it is far from universal.

Many of us have healthy co-parenting situations or we’ve learned how to manage things quietly and effectively. Or we are truly rolling solo with no drama from another parent whatsoever and thriving.

What we won’t do is invite unnecessary confusion into our lives. Peace is expensive honey, and we’ve already paid for it.

3. They Think Our Time Isn’t Valuable

Here’s the thing: if a solo mom is giving you her time, that means something. We don’t have the luxury of spontaneity like we used to. Babysitters, schedules, school nights—it all has to be considered.

So no, we’re not “doing too much” because we plan ahead. We’re being responsible. If that feels like pressure, you may not be ready for grown-woman dating. Besides, most of us are over 35 and ain’t got time for the nonsense anyway; single mom or not.

4. They Believe They’ll Always Come Second

Yes, our children are a priority. That doesn’t mean there’s no room for love, partnership, or intimacy. It means we know how to juggle because we’ve been doing it for years.

A secure man understands that loving a single mom doesn’t mean competing with her child. It means joining a life that already has structure, love, and purpose.

And if he was really showing up like he was supposed to, he would see how amazing a single mom is at managing multiple things at once.

5. They Think We’ve Lost Our Femininity

Somewhere between car drop offs and lunch packing, people assume solo moms forget how to be soft, romantic, or desirable. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

Single moms are some of the most emotionally intelligent, nurturing, and resilient women you’ll ever meet. We’ve been through things and that depth shows up in how we love, communicate, and show up for the people who deserve us.

We may have to play both parental roles but we haven’t forgotten who we truly are. And it’ll take that special man to nourish that side of us so that we feel safe enough to allow him to see it.

Dating in your 40s hits different.

Dating in your 40s as a single mom? That’s a whole different conversation that frankly, I never thought I’d be having.

But let’s have it. Cause I ain’t NEVER scared. Or scarred.

This isn’t a fairy-tale version. This is the real, unfiltered truth. The kind you only learn through experience, healing, and realizing you are way too grown for nonsense.

And before we even start, let me say this clearly:

You are not bitter. You’re better informed. So miss me with anything somebody else gotta say.

The Dating Pool Has Changed

Let’s not pretend the dating pool is the same as it was in our 20s or even 30s. It’s not. We are not chasing these thrills and rollercoaster rides.

In our 40s, everybody got a past. But also claims to be healed. Ppphhhhttt! Yea ok, until patterns show up faster than promises.

At this stage, you’re no longer dating potential, you’re dating behavior. Confusion, inconsistency, and emotional chaos are immediate turn-offs. If it feels chaotic, it’s already a no. You know that saying, “when someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time”? Yea that should be the dating motto of the 40 and over crowd.

Red flags don’t get prettier with age. They get rather… sad. Throw that fish back in the soiled sea sis.

And if it’s confusing, it’s not a test—it’s information. You are not an airplane, stop wasting your time with Mix Signals McGhee.

You’re Not Desperate—You Have Standards

Your standards didn’t go up because you’re picky (although you should be alittle bit), they went up because your self-respect did. You’re not asking for perfection. You’re asking for clarity, effort, emotional safety, and respect. Heavy on all the above.

When we’re younger, we tend to accept kind of anything just as long as he’s cute, right? And it wasn’t even that you were desperate then, it just was more likely that you would lower your standards for the guy you wanted, even if he wasn’t right for you.

But now that you’ve had some life experiences under your belt and some wisdom in your brain, those standards become a fixture in your life that have no room for the low efforts of a buster. High standards scare low effort every time.

Your Child Comes First (Non-Negotiable)

This part is not up for debate.

Your child comes first. Not sometimes. Always. Especially while just dating. So school activities, sports, play dates, whatever; your potential partner has to understand that they will not be the priority in the beginning.

And besides, you’re not rushing introductions anyway. Depending on the age of the child, introductions don’t need to happen until commitment is at least considered. So because of that, you’re not rearranging your child’s stability for a date.

Oh and you’re not explaining why your child is your priority. Any grown, emotionally secure man should understand that. Anyone who feels threatened by your role as a mother is not your person. Simple.

A man trying to compete with your child already lost. And needs psychological help.

You’re dating—not handing out family access passes.

Healing Changes Who You’re Attracted To

Here’s the plot twist nobody warns you about: healing will mess up the type of man you’re attracted to.

The chaos that once felt exciting now feels exhausting. Inconsistency stops feeling intriguing and starts feeling irritating. And that “spark” you used to chase? Yeah… now it looks like a red flag with abs… Or a dad bod… It’s more than likely a dad bod.

Peace starts to feel attractive. Consistency becomes sexy. Emotional maturity turns into the bare minimum. And calm is the new chemistry.

Loneliness vs. Settling

Let’s be honest—there are moments when being single feels lonely. Especially at night. Especially when the house is quiet. Even when you have dates lined up, that solo sleep will get to the strongest of us.

But there’s something that’s even more lonely… Settling.

Being with someone who doesn’t see you, value you, or respect your life as a single mom will drain you faster than solitude ever could. In your 40s, you should be at a point where you’ve come to love yourself fully and therefore know that while amazing, companionship is something that is a want; a choice. Not an act of void filling.

Lonely nights are much more rewarding than miserable years.

The Right Person Won’t Compete With Your Life

The right man won’t compete with your motherhood. He won’t compete with your independence. He won’t compete with your healing.

He’ll add peace instead of stress. He’ll communicate instead of confuse you. And he’ll understand that your life is already full—he’s just meant to complement it.

There really are men out here who find joy in trying to out do the woman they’re with just as an ego boost for themselves. We don’t do those kinds of men. We don’t do the men who don’t support your wins. Or the men who try to guilt trip you into spending time with them versus your kid.
